The federal government is facing a daunting challenge in finding ways to cut off the flow of Viagra to millions of American men, a new report shows.
The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday announced the drugmaker will have a new drug program for erectile dysfunction, the first step in its effort to address erectile dysfunction.
Viagra, a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, has been a hot topic in the U. S. and Europe since its introduction in 1998.
But in some European countries, it has been used for years, including in the U. S., where it is still available.
This week, the European Commission in Brussels announced that it had launched a national prescription drug program called Eroxon, which is also available in Canada. That drug is known as Levitra, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2002.
But Levitra is not yet available in all of the countries studied. And for men with erectile dysfunction, Viagra has been used by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer for years.
“The public health benefit of having Eroxon available in Canada will help protect against the serious risks that are associated with erectile dysfunction in this population,” said Janet Woodcock, chief medical officer at Pfizer, the maker of Levitra.
But a separate report from the FDA found that in the European Union, more than 90 percent of men with erectile dysfunction have not taken a generic version of Viagra.
And a recent study from the University of Southern California revealed that up to 40 percent of men taking a drug for erectile dysfunction are now taking generic versions of the drug.
A separate report from the U. Food and Drug Administration found that over 40 percent of men on the drug are now taking the generic version of the drug.
The drug is also used in Canada by a number of pharmaceutical companies, including Eli Lilly and Co. and Mylan and Sandoz.
“The problem is not with Eroxon,” said Mark Kavanagh, president of the Society for Sexual Medicine. “It’s the problem with Viagra.”
Viagra is the only drug approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in the U. but only by the Food and Drug Administration.
In the past, Pfizer had been trying to block a drug company from selling it as a generic, which allowed the drug company to sell the drug to the consumer in the U. for a few cents a pill. Pfizer had also sought to block a competitor from making the drug available in the U.
Since then, the company has also tried to block some generic versions of Viagra, such as the brand-name Levitra.
The only way to stop the sale of the drug is for Pfizer to make an agreement with the generic maker of Viagra. Pfizer is already selling Viagra to doctors in Canada and other countries.
